Our Technologies

Progress in science depends on new techniques, new discoveries and new ideas, probably in that order.

The Cryoskeleton Lab

- Marion Jasnin

"Marion and her team use cryo-electron tomography to explore the molecular architecture of native actin assemblies and elucidate the structural principles that govern actin functions in health and disease.

The nanoPROBE lab

- Jian Cui

Through combination of engineered nanomaterials coupled to nano-optical detection, Jian and his interdisciplinary team develop methods to discover yet unknown biological signals. Their understanding and ultimate control promise entirely new avenues towards prevention or treatment of complex human diseases.

Microfluidics & Organ-on chip

- Janna Nawroth & Matthias Meier

Janna and Matthias uniquely integrate tissue engineering and microfluidic chip technologies with advanced imaging and analysis tools at single cell and spatial resolution. Focused on the mechanical & functional properties of ciliated tissue in the airway epithelium, respective human pancreatic lineage differentiation, both labs accelerate patient-specific diagnostics and therapeutics.

Single-cell & multi-omics

Celia P. Martinez Jimenez, Boyan Bonev & Nico Battich

Single-cell genomics, in combination with genetic perturbations, advanced imaging and AI-based data-integration unravel cellular- and tissue variability during development, homeostasis and ageing. Celia investigates the functional impact of cellular heterogeneity during healthy aging and chronic diseases with a particular focus on the human liver. Through the combination of single-cell sequencing and single molecule imaging, Nicolas aims to resolve functional relations between genome structure and gene transcription. Boyan’s lab decodes the epigenetic mechanisms controlling cell fate, particularly during cortical (brain) development, that will ultimately inform new biomarker or stem cell-based regenerative solutions.

AI-based Systems Genetics

Na Cai, Paolo Casale & Bastian Rieck

Focused on computational biology & biomedical AI, these groups apply and/or develop machine learning- and statistical tools to (i) better integrate multi-omics datasets for disease prediction/prevention, or (ii) analyze large cohorts of patient data to decipher the genetics of complex trait diseases, such as Depression, Autism or Alzheimers. Na specializes in understanding the etiology of mental diseases, such as the spectrum of major depressive disorder (MDD), using large-scale population-based association for disease subtyping and multi-omics investigations to interrogate underlying molecular mechanisms. Paolo’s research integrates deep learning-based biomedical image analyses with multiomics and population genetic data to unravel new disease loci at the population level. Bastian pursues mathematical concepts, such as topology, to derive and test novel algorithms that genuinely model biology in an interpretable and reproducible manner.

One health

Lara Urban

Lara and team deploy genomic tools and develop portable technologies to benefit environmental (human) health and the conservation of biodiversity. The lab engages in the monitoring of bio-aerosols and zoonotic disease distribution using portable sensors and eDNA-sequencing in the context of our planet's health.
